What our customers say..
"I had been looking at electric assisted bikes for some time and luckily I found Brighton Bikes . From my first contact I saw the difference between a large organisation and dealing with a one man business. Darren allowed me a test drive on his personal bike and from then on took time and trouble to explain everything to me . For about half the price of buying an electric bike from anywhere else, he expertly converted my existing bike.
I have now covered over 600 miles on and off road and I am absolutely delighted. I am still getting exercise but have the option of having assistance when needed . I would not hesitate to recommend Brighton e bikes" .

"Thank you so much for all your help and advice. I'm absolutely delighted with my bike!
I did 20 miles on it today, admittedly quite a flat route, but I enjoyed a gentle boost when I felt a bit tired and the best bit was cycling home from the station (uphill all the way, right up through the centre of Lewes) which I usually dread, but today it felt really smooth and pretty
and relaxing. I'm looking forward to my next ride already, and know I'm going to use it so much more.
I found the gears easier than my old bike. Much prefer just having the 8 on one shift, and they are all really smooth.
Another unexpected benefit was that I felt safer. At a couple of points where I might struggle normally, junctions, roundabouts etc. the bit of extra power meant I could get away more quickly, and concentrate on navigating safely.
I really appreciated that you took so much time to explain everything, and the try-out ride this morning was really helpful. It gave me more confidence that I had tackled that hill and succeeded.
Would thoroughly recommend your service rather than buying a bike 'off the peg'."

"At 62, my asthma is gradually worsening and I find it hard to walk far without becoming breathless - especially if the going is uphill. So, for the last couple of years I’ve been looking for a mildly aerobic, outdoor, activity that’s energetic enough to keep me fit but doesn’t raise my breathing rate to a level where the asthma kicks in. Short of moving to Holland, it hasn’t been easy.
I started looking into off-the-shelf e-bikes but I didn’t like the eye watering prices, so I started looking into building one myself which in turn led me to Darren at Brighton E-Bikes. His workshop wasn’t far from me in Brighton, so I made an appointment to meet him for a chat…
Darren was happy to spend time discussing and advising options for donor bikes but the clincher, for me, was that he took the time to accompany me on a test ride. I had been offered test rides at a couple of shops but they’d never offered to come along with me and, although I’m quite happy on a bicycle (and I ride a 1100cc motorbike on a daily basis), riding an e-bike, with unfamiliar controls, on a public road was a little daunting, so I really appreciated his presence.
It took a couple of weeks to find a donor bike: I wanted a mountain bike in order to get out into the fresh air and avoid traffic fumes as much as possible and a new, 2016 model, Fuji Nevada seemed to fit the bill at £315. It took Darren a little over a day to fit the conversion; a Bafang BBS02B 250W motor with a Panasonic 36V 14.5Ah battery and control panel which cost £920 plus £180 for labour. All in all, it cost between £1000 to £1500 less than an equivalent off-the-shelf e-bike from one of the reputable brands. Oh, and Darren’s care during construction and workmanship is superb. Honestly, his routing of cables is a joy to behold!
What’s it like to ride? Fantastic! In addition to my ability to pedal, I have 9 levels of ‘power assist’. By selecting the appropriate combination of gear/power input, I can pedal at the perfect rate for me at any time - no matter how long or steep the hill or how strong the prevailing wind. In short, I can maximise my effort without my asthma kicking in and, if the going gets really tough, there’s also a ‘thumb throttle’ that gives full power instantly, whether I pedal or not. In town, on the thumb throttle alone, I can pull away from traffic lights with more or less the same acceleration as a car. Thus far, the only things that have defeated me are a couple of steep, deeply rutted and slippery, byways, which would have been a challenge on foot, let alone a bicycle. Even so, I managed to get up the worst using the ‘Pedestrian Mode’, which propels the bike at walking speed, whilst I steered alongside.
Bearing in mind that I’m probably using more assistance than the averagely fit person, the battery gives me a range of about 60-65 miles on the road and 40-45miles off-road. A major advantage of the Bafang system is that, should the electrics fail, I can still cycle home relatively easily using the pedals as the motor disengages automatically from the power train. On an off-the-shelf e-bike, failed electrics would still entail turning the motor, via the pedals, requiring greater effort.
Before this, I was pretty much limited to walks of 2 to 3 miles up on the Downs at most. I’m now making regular, off-road, trips of 20 to 30 miles and getting to places that I’d lost hope of ever seeing again years ago and my ‘peak flow’ asthma readings have improved measurably."

"I had been considering converting my bike to electric for some time since I first experienced one while holidaying in San Francisco. I researched it online and watched dozens of YouTube videos before deciding on the Bafang mid drive. I looked online for UK suppliers and discovered Brighton bikes. As I work abroad for long periods and live in North Wales getting down to Brighton wasn't a good option so I decided to self build. I ordered the kit and necessary parts and Darren was really helpful in this advising me which parts I needed and which I didn't. When I got home the kit was waiting for me so I set about installing the kit. Most of the build process was straight forward, but on the couple of occasions I was unsure I emailed Darren with a photo and he got back to me with the info very quickly. I got the job done in about 6 hours and soon had my first test ride. I free wheeled down the hill at about 25mph for a mile turned around and started back up. On pedal assist level 5, it was like there was no hill and I breezed up it at 12mph. On a straight level road I used to be pushing it quite hard to do 14 mph but this exceeded all expectations, now the world is flat. I decided to try a throttle only climb on a steeper and longer hill, not a problem and 10 miles of hard use later I still had about 70% battery left. The Bafang mid drive kit is the best fun I've had cycling since I learned to ride a bike. It certainly turns heads as I pass other cyclists and sometime cars without any real effort. Thoroughly recommend Brighton E-bikes for their support, customer service and prices, I won't use any one else and Darren is a first rate guy always ready to help. I am very pleased with the way this whole project went and the outcome."

“I bought a Bafang BBS02B and a 14.5ah battery from Darren at Brighton e-bikes. I was hoping that it might give me more of a lift on hills than the BBS01 that I was used too. The DIFFERENCE IS HUGE!
My bike climbs anything now.
Well worth the money, and the support is excellent.
I don’t have great eyesight and got stuck with some basics but Darren quickly offered helpful advice to get the kit fitted up okay.
I would readilly recommend Brighton E-bikes."
- John Campbell, Inverness, July 2017.
"Just a quick email to say I'm loving my converted e-bike and whizzing home from work up Wilson Avenue is a breeze. Overtaking Lycra clad cyclists and seeing the shock on their faces as a little granny effortlessly passes is priceless!"
- Chris, Woddingdean, April 2017.
"I got my first electric bike about 10 years ago due to ill health. This was full size but foldable so I could put it on the tube.
As my health improved, and I wanted to go further than the charge allowed, I had the back wheel with the motor taken off and replaced with a normal wheel. This also helped with the weight as the motor made the bike very heavy. I was then doing about 70 miles per week. After a few years, my health again deteriorated, so I stopped using the bike for commuting.
One nice day, my wife and I put our bikes on the rack on the back of the car and went down to Brighton for the day. We had stopped for a rest and I was approached by a guy who noted that my bike had originally had an electric motor. I chatted to Darren, and he explained he fitted a new breed of electric motor to bikes. We discussed this and he gave me his contact details. After considerable thought and checking the finances, I contacted E- Bikes in Brighton and spoke to Darren. We subsequently arranged to go down to Brighton and have the new motor fitted. We arrived at the address to find a small but clean, well equipped workshop. Darren checked the bike, explained a few extra things that would need doing and a job plan was agreed. We stayed overnight at a hotel, enjoying ourselves in Brighton. The following day Darren updated us with his progress throughout the day, until he was able to tell us the bike was ready. He went through everything he had done and showed me exactly how it all worked. The bike looked like new. I put the bike on the rack and brought it home. The next day I took the bike out for a ride. Wow, what a great motor, very easy to ride and surprisingly fast, much faster than my original motor. This work meant I was able to keep a bike that suited me, but made it much easier to use. Darren did such a good job that I would highly recommend him and E-Bikes. (my wife has already given out his details to a friend)."

"I have been riding my Linear LWB recumbent with trailer for the last eight years, enjoying frequent rides around Gatwick. However, my advancing years have meant that I was increasingly becoming tired towards the end of my journey. My recent discussions with a great friend led me to explore the possibility of adding an electric motor to my machine. Fortunately, I chose Brighton e-bikes to complete the job.
I was immediately impressed by Darren of Brighton e bikes. As a keen cyclist himself, he was able to pass on his knowledge and enthusiasm to his customers. Coupled with a desire to do the best possible job. This has resulted in a 'dream machine ' for me. With the Bafang mid drive motor fitted I was totally satisfied with the result. The motor runs in almost complete silence, I only know it is working by the energy I feel through the pedals. The throttle assist is great to get you away from stationary. All in all a very well thought out package. Currently I have only used up to level 3 out of possible 9 levels. This has still resulted in me feeling I am going downhill all the time. I have yet to tackle any significant hills, but I feel confident they will not pose a significant problem.
I should like to thank Darren for converting my 'dream machine' to reality. I now expect to be able to complete many many more years on my favourite form of transport, my Linear LWB recumbent.
Once again a big thank you to Darren from Brighton e bikes."

"I have just completed 2,000 miles on a Bafang powered bike converted by Brighton E-bikes and am convinced that bespoke after-market conversions are the way forward.
I first met Darren whizzing around on one of his conversions on a local bike ride last summer. I was riding my 1990 Specialized Stumpjumper which had given me really outstanding service with frequent 20 mile rides on the hills before breakfast and on full days easily doing double that amount. For a few years though I had been struggling along with damaged knees caused by sports injuries and wear & tear and this had prevented me doing more than 10 miles on relatively flat ground without pain. We immediately started chatting about bikes in general and in particular about the Bafang motor unit he was using for his bike conversions. So I set him a challenge “put one onto my 25 year old Stumjumper in the next week and I’ll take it to France on holiday” When he started work on it he phoned the same evening to say the bottom bracket bearing was so corroded it was looking doubtful he could remove it without the possibility of damage in which case it was likely the bike would no longer be usable - he wanted a decision? It was made immediately “keep at it”. After another 2 days of soaking and fiddling he finally succeeded and exposed the shell of the frame which cleaned up beautifully. The bike was delivered by Darren a day or so later. He looked as proud as punch and I was delighted. The bike had been called many things during this process and there is a picture on his website “A Pig of a Job” demonstrating what can be achieved with patience, skill and due diligence.
Since that holiday I have been completely sold on the product and Darren’s passion and enthusiasm, so in January I purchased a new Specialised bike. The motor unit was transferred onto the new bike and I am now doing the same distances and rides as before without pain or stress to the joints, but having the full benefit of the aerobic exercise. It’s so good to ride the South Downs Way and see the top of the hills again! Thank you Darren & Brighton E-bikes."
- Trevor, Shoreham 2016.
I was beginning to find the hills in Brighton too much and was not riding my bike as often as I used to. Since Darren of Brighton E-bikes fitted my Bafang electric motor, my enthusiasm for cycling has returned and I look for any excuse to get out. The conversion was carried out with meticulous attention to detail and Darren was always aware of my hope that my much loved bike would not be altered in any way that was not strictly necessary. I was particularly concerned to keep the overall weight to a minimum. The changes in appearance are negligible and the bike still weighs less than eighteen kg. As for the hills, no problem at all. At first I was unsure if having my bike converted was a good idea but my questions were patiently answered and Darren's calm, professional approach soon convinced me. Best biking decision for years.
If you are thinking of an electric bike Brighton E-bikes is the place to start your search. I cannot recommend them highly enough. At 75 I feel I've been given a new lease of cycling life."

"I only like to potter into town, feed the birds and visit friends, but some days I was finding the bike a bit much, especially when the winds picked up. I now ride the outward journey under my own steam as before, and when I feel like I've had enough I add a little tickle of pedal assist to glide home. It allows me to go further in less time and it's still my beautiful 'Sandra Dee'. "I just had to write and say a heart felt thanks to Brighton E-bikes for giving me a new lease of life!
My Dawes bike had sat in the garage for 6 years just gathering dust. I have a lung condition which means that even light exercise leaves me very short of breath and uncomfortable.
Since my bike upgrade I have been able to get out and about so much more, having the motor has been a great help. I used to walk to get my exercise but now I can go much further afield, even to my nearest town.
I would recommend any person with a restricted health life style to consider an electric bike conversion. It's made a big difference to me."
- Chris, Surrey Nov 2015.
"I have not enjoyed using my bike this much in years. The little motor gives just enough power to keep a good steady pace, even on hills that I used to have to walk up. The freedom is liberating and everywhere just feels closer. I'm still getting the same amount of exercise, which means I'm going further and seeing more; what's not to like?
Thank you so much Brighton e-bikes :)."

"We are loving our bikes!!!!!!!!
Converting our bikes is the best thing we did."
- Hilda and Steven, Hove. Oct. 2015.
"I still get some really good exercise but I'm quicker and feel really good the whole ride. I am not the usual beetroot red colour when I get to work by bike."
- Mr Hill, Seven Dials. Oct 2015.
"I used to struggle up Elm Grove every day, now I glide my way up smoothly and effortlessly with the help of pedal assist. It still feels like my good old bike, just with a turbo button for when I need it!"
- Ruth, Hove. Oct 2015.
"Since my knee injury I had been unable to ride even short journeys. The addition of a mid drive system gives me the confidence to go further afield again and I can tailor my effort to how my knee is feeling that day.
It's been a life-saver to me."
- Justin, Lightwater. Oct 2015.

Oct 2015.
